Fast & Easy Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Posted on July 24, 2014 | Posted under Jewelry, July 2014

Do you ever wish your jewelry could look brand new? Well, it can! With everyday household items you can get your jewelry looking brilliant and beautiful in less than 5 minutes!

Silver: For all silver jewelry, tarnish is the enemy. When silver begins to tarnish it developes a dark, almost black like film. Without proper care, the tarnish can build up overtime making it harder to remove. For your silver items that are merely dull, have film, or are beginning to discolor, we have a quick fix!

You will need:

  • 1 Medium size bowl
  • Warm Water
  • Mild Dish Soap
  • 2 Small Soft Cloths

In a medium size bowl, mix 3-4 drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Place your jewelry in the bowl and dip in soft cloth. Gently rub your jewelry with the cloth until tarnish is gone. Rinse jewelry with cool water and then follow by buffing the jewelry with a soft dry cloth until dry.

Rings: For rings with gems and stones, you will begin to notice that everyday build up of lotions and dirt can clog the prongs and give your stone a foggy look to it. This can easily be removed and your stones can look like new in only a few minutes!

You will need:

  • 1 Small Bowl
  • Very Mild/Gentle Soap
  • 1 Extra Soft Bristle Toothbrush (Baby Toothbrush)
  • Soft Cloth

Fill a small bowl with warm water and mix in 2-3 drops of very mild/gentle soap. Drop your ring in the bowl and let sit for 1 minute. Dip the toothbrush in the bowl to get it wet and pick up the ring. Very gently (Gentle is key! Especially for diamonds and gold jewelry so you do not scratch the metal) brush the tooth brush against the stone and get the bristles underneath the stone and in-between the prongs to loosen dirt. Keep dipping both the ring and toothbrush in the soapy water and clean until you see the original shine and brilliance from the stone. Rinse with cold water and lay on a dry flat cloth until dry.

Gold: Although it is not as noticeable as tarnish on silver, dirt does build up on gold giving it a more dull or darker golden look. With a few everyday household items you can get your gold jewelry looking brand new!

You will need:

  • 1 Small Bowl
  • Club Soda or Sodium-Free Seltzer Water
  • 1 Extra Soft Bristle Toothbrush (Baby Toothbrush)
  • Small Strainer or Tea Strainer
  • Soft Cloth

Fill a small bowl with club soda or sodium-free seltzer water and add 2-3 drops of mild dish soap. Put your jewelry into the small strainer and place it in the bowl to soak for about 5 minutes. Swish around the strainer then take out your jewelry and begin to gently clean with a extra soft bristled toothbrush. Place jewelry back into strainer and run under cold water. Be sure to rinse the jewelry entirely before laying on a soft cloth to dry.

Costume Jewelry: You can clean your costume jewelry with the same solution for your gold!

  • 1 Small Bowl
  • Club Soda or Sodium-Free Seltzer Water
  • 3 Soft Cloths

Fill a small bowl with club soda or sodium-free seltzer water and add 2-3 drops of mild dish soap. Instead of soaking your costume jewelry (Costume jewelry usually contains glue so it's important you do not soak or immerse your costume jewelry in water or solution!), dab a soft cloth into the solution and gently wipe any dirt or grime. Dab another clean cloth into cold water and gently rinse the jewelry by wiping away the solution. Using a dry cloth, pat the jewelry dry and ay upside down so the mixture won't soak into the setting.

Make A Wish

Wishbones are known to bring good luck or are after given to others as a symbol of friendship. But where did this so-called luck brought by a wishbone come from?

The legends of the wishbone came from civilizations dating back to the 4th Century. Etruscans, Romans... Britain, America held turkey or chicken wishbone contests where they would pull the dry turkey or chicken bone until it snapped, making the "lucky break"; believing the winner's wish or dream would come true. In today's culture, many see the wishbone as a symbol that will "catch" their dreams, bring good luck, and make their wishes come true.

At Jessica & Co. we believe in good luck and making wishes come true. Check out our Lucky Wishbone necklace in 14k gold, sterling silver, and 14k gold dipped sterling silver. The wishbone makes a great gift for a best friend or for bridesmaids.

Meaning Of A Pearl

Posted on February 17, 2014 | Posted under February 2014, Jewelry

Pearls have been the most popular for brides to wear on their wedding day for hundreds of years and still continue to be a strong favorite today. From the traditional princess length pearl necklace to a stunning pendent, earrings, or bracelet mixing pearls with other precious gemstones, pearls are a fast favorite for weddings. Even many bridal gowns, veils, and headpieces are adorned with pearls to create a stunningly elegant effect.

Eastern cultures believe that pearls symbolize purity and spiritual transformation. Simply wearing a pearl reminds the wearer to be honest, pure, wise, and to walk with the utmost dignity. Different colors of pearls bear different meanings; white pearls symbolize purity, innocence, faith, and honesty; gold or black pearls symbolize prosperity and riches; rose or pink pearls symbolize appreciation and joyfulness.

Pearls have for many years been considered ideal wedding presents because of the symbolic meanings of purity and innocence. They have also come to symbolize a happy marriage and is much preferred by girls during their engagement days or by brides as their primary jewelry. Pearl jewelry is often found as family heirlooms, passed on from a grandmother to mother and from a mother to the daughter. Being the most magical and feminine of all, pearl jewelry has long been considered as one of the most romantic items that can be gifted to a lady.Today, the tradition of bestowing pearls upon the bride continues. Often the father of the bride or the groom gives the gift of pearls. Many brides give their bridesmaids pearl necklaces, bracelets or earrings too.

Pearls were once called the 'wedding gem' and are still a popular choice for brides today. The only gem born inside a living organism, a pearl is truly a matchless gift of nature. Each pearl is truly one of a kind. Pearls embody those words in every facet of their being. Every pearl is a unique creation much like everyone of us. This significance is what makes the pearl and the bride a perfect match.

Jewelry Gift Giving Guide

Posted on September 25, 2013 | Posted under Jewelry, September 2013

Does holiday gift giving leave you stressed? How can you tell if you are buying quality jewelry? How do you know the ring size? What type of jewelry is perfect for your mom or girlfriend? Find the answers to these questions and more with our Jewelry Gift Giving Guide so you can gift with confidence and enjoy the holiday season!

Buying Quality Jewelry. Jewelry that is made of 925 sterling silver will be stamped with a "925". You can find the stamp on the back of charms or in the clasp of necklaces and bracelets. For rings, the stamp is located on the inside of the band. 925 sterling silver is the best quality you can find. Any jewelry made of less quality could cause allergic reactions and cause discoloring to the skin.

For 14k gold the stamp will be marked 14k, 18k, or 24k. 14k is the most common for gold jewelry. Jewelry made of any other quality can cause allergic reactions, discoloration to the skin, and fading or chipping of metals. The best quality 14k gold dipped jewelry will have the "925" stamp.

Why is it important to buy quality? Quality made jewelry looks and feels better. Not only that, it lasts a lifetime. Mixed metals can be damaged easily and the damage cannot be undone.

Jewelry for Mom. When picking out jewelry for your mom it's important you choose something of quality, something that reflects her personality and of course, something as beautiful as she is. Our Jessica & Co. necklaces are designed with these things in mind. Each necklace is diamond cut so it gives off the same luminous sparkle as a diamond. Necklaces are made in both 14k gold and sterling silver so they can be worn everyday for years and years. The Dove symbolizes loyalty and strength.

Jewelry for your Girlfriend. Jewelry for your girlfriend should represent one thing... How much you love her. When you give her a special piece of jewelry she will be reminded everyday how lucky she is to have you in her life.

Rings. When choosing a ring make sure you know her ring size. If you are unsure then you can measure one of her rings that she leaves out in her room (asking her will only give away the surprise!). If you have a penny or a dime this can help you determine the size. Lay a dime beside the ring, if the ring is the same size as a dime then her ring size is a 7. If it is smaller then a dime her ring size is 6. If the ring is larger than a dime her ring size is 8. A penny is equal to the ring size of 9. The most common ring size is 7 so if you aren't sure then go with a size 7.

Necklaces. The common chain lengths are 16 inches and 18 inches. For petite build women or women who are 5'5 and shorter it's best to choose a 16 inch length. For medium to strong build women or women with a height of 5'6 + go with the 18 inch chain.

As always, each and every Jessica & Co. order is packaged perfectly for every special occasion. Find the perfect gift for your special someone by visiting our shop. Enjoy!
